Tanning small game with alcohol/turpentine?
Has anybody ever tried tanning a hide with a 50/50 Alcohol (methanol) and Turpentine mix? I skinned my first squirrel pelt this week and I'm waiting for it to finish drying out. I'd like the pelt to be as soft as possible but keeping the fur on it is the most important since I'd like to sew it into a hat. I know this isn't the most common tanning method but it seems cheaper and easier... anybody had any good or bad results?
Just go to Van Dykes or TASCO (online) and order the proper chemicals. There are many different selections depending on what your needs are. They are cost effective also. Do it right the first time and you will save money in the long run.
A hat huh? Never heard of a squirrel hat, but could be cool. You probably need more than one squirrel though.
Also, you don't need the hide to dry out before you tan it, generally. You could skin and flesh the hide, freeze it, then tan it after it thaws out. No need to rehydrate.
