Did Holbein paint in watercolors,?
I recently purchased a gold gilt ed frame with Henry the eight , Painted on But very fine The frame is very old,
Which one?
Hans Holbein the Elder (1465?-1524).
Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543).
I believe that it is the younger that you are seeking.
Oh but YES he did paint in Watercolour as well.
In 1538-1539 Holbein was sent on journeys abroad to paint two of Henry's prospective wives. One of these was Christina of Denmark, whose portrait of 1538 (in the National Gallery, London) is one of Holbein's most enduring images. He also began to paint portrait miniatures during his second stay in England, having learnt the technique of painting in watercolour on vellum from the artist Lucas Hornebolte. Despite the minute scale of these works, Holbein was able to imbue them with a simplicity and monumentality that is rarely seen in later miniatures and which was to inspire the great Elizabethan miniaturist Nicholas Hilliard.
In England, where he became court painter to Henry VIII, Holbein was known chiefly as a painter of portraits. His services were much in demand. The more than 100 miniature and full-size portraits he completed at Henry's court provide a remarkable document of that colorful period.
He painted Oil on wood, frescos, watercolours and colored pastels on paper as well as illustrated books, he designed stained-glass windows, a series of 41 woodcuts called The Dance of Death. He also designed jewelry and furniture, costumes for pageantries and decorations for halls, weapons and goblets.
